Heshima is a Swahili word meaning respect, dignity, honor, and value—a beautiful reminder that every person has purpose, every person has value, and every person deserves to be treated with dignity.

The Heshima Collection was created around that message.

The artisan-made beads featured in this collection were sourced from Dignity Designs, a fair-trade initiative of the Heshima Center in Nairobi, Kenya. Heshima works to provide care, education, support, and opportunity for children with special needs and their families—individuals who may otherwise experience stigma, exclusion, or abuse.

Employment Is Dignity

For mothers of children with special needs, finding employment can be especially difficult. A lack of appropriate childcare, social stigma, and limited family support can create significant barriers to earning a dependable income.

Dignity Designs helps change that.

While their children participate in programs at Heshima, mothers are able to work nearby at the Dignity Designs workshop, creating beautiful jewelry and textile products using African materials. Through this work, the women receive a monthly salary as well as assistance with healthcare for themselves and their children.

It is more than employment. It is an opportunity for security, community, purpose, and dignity.

The beads used in TheMelsCreative's Heshima Collection come from this meaningful work and may include West African trade beads, cow bone beads, recycled brass beads, and ostrich eggshell beads.

Each piece in the Heshima Collection is then designed and assembled with love and intention by TheMelsCreative—honoring the artisans and the stories behind every bead.
